Getting scored on once…twice…three times…SOLD!

November 3rd, 2009 | by johnearnhart |

Welcome back. Hopefully, y’all had a good, safe Halloween. I enjoyed it at a wedding. Yes, a wedding. Anyway, let’s get crackin’!

As I’m sure all eleven of my blog followers are wondering, what happened Monday night? Well, the Coyotes played some inspirational hockey. However, they only played it for 39 minutes. The Coyotes quickly fell behind 1-0 but then rallied to get three goals and take a commanding lead. But then, the ‘Yotes tucked their tails between their legs and gave the Kings the game.
Bitter? Nah. It’s not like we have the best goals-against average in the league (1.92) or that Shane Doan has 25 goals and 60 points in 72 games against the Kings. After all, who didn’t see this coming? Of the 30 goals scored on our ‘Yotes this season, the Kings account for 13 of them.
Even though Phoenix had a season-low 16 shots on goal, the game clearly had plenty of offense. Scottie Upshall is no longer in Dave Tippett’s doghouse and managed to score his fourth goal of the season and the 50th of his career. Martin Hanzal and Doan accounted for the other two goals.
In netminder news, Jason LaBarbera started in net for the first time at home. There were times in the game when he looked like the World’s Greatest Swiss Army Knife and other times when he looked like the World’s Greatest Piece of Swiss Cheese. The loss brings LaBarbera to 1-2-0 on the season. With that debacle behind us, the Coyotes will now travel to Colorado to face the lowly Avalanche tomorrow.

Four other quick notes about the ‘Yotes: (Wow…that rhymed)

• Our first round draft pick from 2008, Mikkel Boedker, was recalled. He only has two shots on goal this year but he had 11 goals and 17 assists last year. He should see a few minutes of ice time this week but nothing worth running out to your fantasy team and grabbing just yet.
• The final papers have been processed for the sale of our beloved Coyotes. The final price for the team was around $140 million beans. Now, we cross our fingers and hope the NHL can find a local buyer so we don’t have to end up back in Canada. Let’s hope someone without the last name Ricketts steps forward.
• Justice has been served. James Wisniewski has been suspended for two games for his cheap forearm hit on our captain. Ironically, the officiating crew didn’t see anything wrong with it and didn’t give Wisniewski a penalty during the game. This news isn’t too bizarre considering how credible officiating crews at sporting events have been recently. If you missed the cheap hit, the video is below. For vengeance purposes, I also included a second video of Wisniewski taking a puck to the head.

• Lastly, should America sponsor a speed skating team? No. Let’s try to sponsor the Phoenix Coyotes first. Sorry, Apolo Anton Ohno.
